Frequently Asked Questions -Chemical Peels

How do chemical peels work? All peels use an acid-base to exfoliate the top layers of skin. The blend of acids mentioned (salicylic, lactic and glycolic) remove the surface layers of damaged skin. Dead skin cells are replaced by healthier ones, allowing the skin’s own clarity and tightness to resurface.

How many treatments do I need? Your therapist can advise how many treatments are necessary to achieve your desired results. In most cases, between one and six treatments can achieve dramatic improvements for many skin types and conditions. Peels can be performed at two to four-week intervals until the desired goals are reached.

How soon will I see results? When your skin has finished peeling completely, you will immediately notice the dramatic improvement to your complexion. Your skin’s appearance will continue to improve for the next four to six weeks, becoming firmer, clearer, smoother, healthier and younger looking.

Is it painful? A mild to warm sensation may be experienced for a few minutes whilst the peel is being applied, but it is not expected to cause any severe pain.

How long will it take to recover after the procedure? After the treatment, the area of the skin may be tight and slightly red. Skin may incur gentle peeling or shedding within two to three days which can last up to seven days, however not all skin will peel.

Can all skin types be treated? All skin types can be treated safely when before and aftercare advice is followed. Your therapist will advise the suitability of the treatment for darker skin types.
